Student proposals for the Valle Program are accepted annually from October 15th through February 1st of the following year. Studies for this application period must begin sometime during the calendar year of the February 1st due date.

The Valle Scholarship and Scandinavian Exchange Program is requesting proposals from the Civil and Environmental Engineering and College of Built Environments faculty at the University of Washington to facilitate interaction between UW faculty and Nordic University faculty or Nordic professional organizations. We anticipate awarding about $50,000 in funding (5-8 proposals).

Interactions We Will Fund   The Valle Program will fund these types of interactions:

  • A UW professor and/or student(s) traveling to a Nordic country/countries to collaborate or establish collaboration on research, teaching, or a mutual project with at least one faculty or professional based in a Nordic country. This person does not need to be a citizen of a Nordic country.
  • A Nordic country faculty or professional traveling to the UW to participate in a final Ph.D. exam as a Ph.D. committee member. We anticipate this traveling person to also give a lecture or presentation to the department or subgroup of the department focused on a topic of their expertise and choice.

Why We Are Requesting These Proposals

The Valle Program’s mission is meaningful graduate student exchange experiences between UW and Nordic countries. We want proposals from faculty that seek to create long-term academic and/or professional relationships between UW and Nordic scholars and/or professionals that enable graduate student exchange. Specifically, we want to help create and foster these relationships because we think they lead to meaningful student exchange experiences over the long term and can have impacts beyond just the Valle Program.

Who Should Apply

Faculty in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the College of Built Environments at the University of Washington.

Timing

Proposals should be for travel from March, 2026 through March 2027. For travel after March 2027 please apply to the next RFP in early 2027.

FUNDING

Funding supports faculty engagement/collaboration with Nordic universities and/or organizations. A funded proposal is expected to provide support for UW faculty engagement and/or collaboration with Nordic universities or professional organizations, to include faculty/staff travel in support of such engagement and/or collaboration.

Funding is available up to $10,000 per award. Funding can go towards faculty/staff travel/lodging and student support. We do not fund faculty/staff salary, but are happy to support students in any way if they are part of the proposal. For example, you may propose to have a student accompany you on travel. We are happy to consider funding your travel, and your student's travel and their pay while participating in the project.

One More Thing We Require

We require you to present the Valle Scholarship and Scandinavian Exchange program to whatever organization you or a student is visiting if it is not the UW. We will train you on award, and have a pre-made slide and slide deck for your use.
